A closed-back headset that retains the sound qualities of an open-back model
Closed headphones generally offer compromises in terms of sound quality compared with open models, notably a more restricted sound stage and sometimes less natural bass. The challenge for Audeze was to retain the sound qualities for which its open-air headphones are renowned, while offering the acoustic isolation of a closed model.
The LCD-S20 uses 90 mm planar magnetic transducers, manufactured at Audeze’s facilities in Southern California. These transducers incorporate the brand’s patented technologies: Fluxor magnetic arrays, Fazor waveguides and Uniforce voice coils. Claimed frequency response ranges from 10 Hz to 40 kHz, with total harmonic distortion of less than 0.1% at 100 dB SPL.
The impedance of the LCD-S20 is 18 ohms, making it compatible with a wide range of devices, and its sensitivity of 93 dB/1mW enables comfortable sound levels to be achieved without the need for a powerful amplifier. The headphones can withstand a maximum sound pressure level of over 120 dB.
