Description
Created 20 years ago by 3 passionate engineers from 3M, Label DMP for Digital Music Products is dedicated to direct digital recording. In a world where recordings and dynamics have the unfortunate habit of being compressed by the studios in charge, we set out to capture every nuance and dynamic by minimizing the signal path and processing. The result is a refreshingly honest representation of great musicians playing their music in the same room at the same time.
Sony recently introduced a high-definition digital format: DSD (Direct Stream Digital). We didn’t miss the opportunity to dive into the breach opened by this technological advance, which also allowed us to further simplify the mixing and digital transfer process.
DMP was the first label to offer multi-channel DSD recording to the audio world, using special microphones developed by Shure. It was the first time we had used five identical microphones for a single recording. Connected directly to the mixer and then to the DSD encoder, the signal path could not have been simpler.
The superiority of DSD over PCM is indisputable and widely audible in the studio. DSD presents not only the instrument, but everything around it. What’s more, Sony offers us the possibility of transforming this high-density digital stream into a 16-bit, 44.1 kHz version via a process called Super Bit Mapping (SBM) Direct.
We insist that the DSD version transformed to 16-bit, 44.1 kHz, although no longer offering half the fabulous qualities of the DSD recording, remains superior to the same recording transformed to 16-bit, 44.1 kHz by the classic PCM route. So we can confirm that the CD layer of our SACDs is of superior quality to the classic CD format.
DMP offers a veritable collection of real multichannel recordings on SACD, as well as CD versions of most of them. This label is a worldwide reference for the supply of CDs used for demonstrations of the greatest brands of the finest equipment.
